Whether you're an independent homeschooler who absorbs the expense for all of the costs of homeschooling, or are part of a charter that provides curriculum, necessary supplies, and extracurricular activities at no charge, everyone enjoys getting a deal! As a former retail buyer who absolutely refuses to pay full retail, I place myself in the “independent” category and I have made it my mission to find homeschooling bargains for our family!

Here are just a few of the great finds I’ve discovered right in my own backyard!
Borders and Barnes & Noble bookstores both offer teacher discounts to homeschooling parents. If you show them a copy of your PSA/R4 form, or provide evidence of belonging to a private or public ISP, they will give you a card that is good for a year that allows you to use their teacher discount (20%) on items used for school. Their policies differ a bit as to what merchandise they will discount, so check with the store. They also offer "Teacher Appreciation Days" a couple of times a year where the discount is even greater.

Beverly's Fabrics offers a 10% discount to teachers and students, including homeschoolers. Simply inform the cashier that something you're purchasing is for school and they will apply the discount. Beverly's also offers "Teacher Appreciation Days," so check with the store for dates/details.

Thrift stores are a great place to find homeschooling materials! You might have to go several times to hit the jackpot as merchandise is always changing. Many organizations and churches have thrift stores throughout the area. I have found wonderful books and things to use for manipulatives and science projects in thrift stores for $1.00 or less!

Local libraries have book sales with books costing as little as 25¢! The Monterey Public Library has a book sale the first Saturday of every month, while Pacific Grove and the Monterey County Free Libraries (Seaside, Marina, Prunedale, Salinas and Carmel Valley to name a few) have book sale tables all the time.

We are also fortunate to live in an area that is full of cultural opportunities. Next month, I’ll share some tips on how you can enjoy these cultural riches at bargain prices!
